Website ‘Biesboschdiensten’: The Ecosystem Services of Dutch National Park de Biesbosch

Erik Verhagen

On this website I describe the history and current state of de Biesbosch. I dive deeper into the ecosystem services the park provides and examine some of the threats it is currently facing. The website is in Dutch and aimed at a general audience.

Like many other people I really enjoy nature, but concretely defining the benefits it provides can sometimes be hard. That’s why I decided to look specifically at one Dutch national park – de Biesbosch – to find out its value, both existential and for us humans. For the Creative Challenge I first started an extensive literature review on the park to create several chapters that could be transformed into pages with content for the website, including topics such as history, water retention, biodiversity, threats, and a page explaining concepts. The second half of the project consisted of me actually putting everything together on the website. To make it look more appealing I drew figures to explain concepts, took pictures of the Biesbosch, and created an interactive map. Now that the website has been finished for a while I hope it has been able to educate people on the benefits the park provides, as well as its beauty!
